One day or another, your home will require major renovations. For some, this can quickly become a real headache. The only way to achieve simple renovations is to prepare for them. Several elements will need to be taken into account before blowing a huge hole in your wall! In order to plan your renovations and to succeed, follow these 6 tips!

1. Define the project and the renovations needed done

An essential first step would be to establish in detail all types of work that will be undertaken. This will make your process will be easier. List exactly all the items to be changed or added into the rooms that are being renovated. For example, if you want to renovate your kitchen, some questions you would ask yourself could be whether or not you want an island, new cabinets, new counters or floors. In short, indicate all the necessary modifications.

2. Make a diagnosis and determine the achievability of the work

Before undertaking any renovation, you first must make a diagnosis of the current state of your home. Existing structures may not allow for certain modifications. Other restrictions may exist, especially if your building is listed or in a conservation area. You may need to check with your municipality to determine this. A home improvement team, such as Dilamco, could help you determine if the work is possible.

3. Establish your budget

Defining your project is important when it comes to budgeting. Before contacting a contractor, you will need to know your budget or, at least, a price range (between $10,000 and $15,000, between $30,000 and $50,000, etc.). As well, you will need an additional 10%-15% for contingencies. The budget will also determine the type of materials to use.

Prioritize what needs to be completed in the short, medium and long term. Some renovation projects can be finalized over a long period of time, spreading the costs out a bit more. It’s up to you depending on the type of renovation and your budget.

4. Choosing the right contractor

Choosing a construction contractor is not easy, especially when you’re less familiar with it. A good contractor will do quality work, on time and according to your budget. Start your research by asking questions, meeting them, asking for client references and looking at the types of projects they have done.

5. Contact your municipality

Most municipalities require permits for renovation in your home, regardless of the type. Any project should be reports to your city to obtain the necessary certification to perform the work with peace of mind.

6. Contact insurances

Some insurance policies do not cover the entirety of the work needed done. Once renovations begin, the risk of theft, damage or things breaking can also increase. It is always better to check with your insurer. In addition, the work could increase the value of your property. Your insurance policy may need to be updated.
